Description

A classic Shrimp Creole recipe from New Orleans, featuring tender shrimp in a savory tomato-based sauce with a blend of Creole spices. This easy-to-make dish is perfect for a quick and flavorful weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 stalks celery, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons Cajun/Creole seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 pound large shrimp (1620 count), peeled and deveined
  • Tabasco sauce, to taste (optional)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
  • 2 lemon wedges (for serving)
  • 3 cups cooked rice (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Heat canola oil and butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat until butter is melted and bubbling.
  2. Add chopped onion, green bell pepper, and celery to the skillet. Cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are soft and translucent.
  3. Stir in minced garlic, Cajun/Creole seasoning, dried thyme, cayenne pepper, and bay leaf. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Pour in tomato sauce, water, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir to combine and bring to a gentle boil.
  5. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer uncovered for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.
  6. Add the peeled and deveined shrimp to the sauce. Cook for 1-2 minutes, or until shrimp turn pink and firm, flipping halfway through.
  7. Season the Shrimp Creole with Tabasco sauce (if using), salt, and black pepper to taste. Remove and discard the bay leaf.
  8. Serve the Shrimp Creole over hot cooked rice, garnished with fresh parsley and lemon wedges.

Notes

  • For added flavor, serve with a side of crusty bread to soak up the sauce.
  • Adjust the amount of Cajun seasoning and cayenne pepper to control the spice level.
  • You can prepare the sauce a day in advance and refrigerate it. Add the shrimp just before serving.
